N.J. bridge is demolished after being buried for over a decade

"After being buried for 15 years without any maintenance, it was determined that they were not safe to form the new abutments for a project that is designed to last a century at least," said Steve Sigmund, a Gateway Commission spokesperson.
"While work started on the bridge in 2010, it was 'nowhere near complete,' Gateway officials said. The Christie administration had the work that had been done filled in, so it went back to just being a hill, officials said."
"The crowning moment for the current Hudson River Tunnel project, which includes rehabilitating the 114-year old existing tunnels came in July when Federal Transit Administration officials awarded a $6.8 billion grant for the project, the final piece needed to start construction."
