Ikea confirms plans to open new store format in iconic shopping district
"IKEA will swoop into an iconic shopping district, giving thousands of shoppers a closer location to shop their favorite items. The furniture retailer will be taking over a six-story corner spot, spanning 25,000 square feet of the building. The Swedish retailer will be making its way into Manhattan's SoHo area - which is home to many other retailers like Louis Vuitton, Uniqlo and David Yurman."
"IKEA will span across the first and second floors, using the lower level of the building for storage and back-office facilities. The remaining floors will be used for office space. "This new location in New York City allows us to continue offering inspiring and accessible home furnishing solutions to everyone, regardless of their budget," Peter van der Poel, the managing director of Ingka Investments, said in a press release."
IKEA will occupy a six-story corner at 529 Broadway in Manhattan's SoHo, spanning 25,000 square feet. Retail will occupy the first and second floors, the lower level will house storage and back-office facilities, and upper floors will be used as office space. IKEA purchased the building for $213 million. SoHo draws over 12.2 million annual visitors and features retailers such as Louis Vuitton and Uniqlo. IKEA opened its first U.S. store in 1985 and reached 52 U.S. stores by January 2025. Previous smaller Manhattan concepts and a Rego Park location have since closed; Red Hook remains the only full-size NYC IKEA.
