On Easter Sunday, a four-alarm fire devastated a six-story apartment building in Mott Haven, displacing numerous residents and resulting in injuries to five individuals, including two firefighters. The FDNY responded rapidly, managing to control the flames after they spread through a concealed roof space. Over 170 firefighters fought the blaze, which caused significant damage to four top-floor apartments. Thankfully, no occupants were trapped. The incident was part of a worrying trend, marking the sixth multiple-alarm fire in the city that weekend, prompting further investigation by the FDNY Fire Marshals Office.
I was walking my dog, Benjamin, and I started hearing sirens; I looked to the left and there was smoke pouring from the roof area.
The FDNY said three civilians and two firefighters suffered minor injuries and were either treated at the scene or transported to local hospitals.
More than 170 firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene, using five hoselines to knock down the main body of fire as it spread along the roofline.
The blaze was eventually brought under control, though four apartments on the sixth floor were left with significant fire damage.
