The Manhattan penthouse, designed by Markham Roberts, displays a blend of sophistication and nostalgia, featuring antiques and a stunning view of the skyline. The owners aimed for an elegant yet restrained aesthetic, reminiscent of earlier New York eras. Key design elements include a double-height entrance hall with a grand domed ceiling and bespoke silk wall coverings. The residence retains its unique character, contrasting sharply with modern renovations seen in many similar apartments. The design team worked collaboratively to enhance the property's original charm while avoiding overt opulence.
"It has such a Cole Porter feeling-this kind of old-fashioned glamour...It has elegance, but it doesn't have bling," says the owner of a Manhattan penthouse.
"A lot of these apartments have been entirely stripped or redone, but this one still had all of its character," concurs Roberts of the duplex, which spans the 16th and 17th floors.
"We joked that we were going to put on sandpaper roller skates and skate around it because we all like beat-up things," the designer notes of the foyer's original, polished-marble floor.
"Passing through the private elevator vestibule-its domed ceiling painted with a botanical motif...the double-height entrance hall recalls Jazz Age grandeur," describes the refined aesthetic of the penthouse.
