Researchers analyzed 1.7 million English-language geotagged tweets and calculated the share of posts containing swear words by X users to determine where the most expletive-launching speakers live. Interestingly, New York State only hit the list at number 17. While cities like Baltimore, Maryland topped the list for most profanity, New York City didn’t even rank in the top 50, underscoring a surprising revelation about swearing patterns across the U.S.
It used to be that the only media you could consume was highly edited. With social media, all of a sudden now, we have direct access to people's informal language. If we have access to people's informal communication and it includes profanity, it showcases a shift in societal norms around swearing, allowing for more openness in expressions of frustration, humor, or emphasis in modern conversations, especially on platforms like Twitter.
