City Council has initiated legal action against Mayor Eric Adams due to his controversial decision to permit ICE to establish an office on Rikers Island, claiming it endangers public safety. A temporary restraining order has been granted by a state judge, blocking ICE access. Concurrently, mayoral candidate Adrienne Adams has received critical endorsements from significant unions and political figures, boosting her campaign. Additionally, tensions rise with Department of Transportation Secretary Duffy threatening to withhold federal funds over New York's congestion pricing program, leading to further legal disputes with Governor Hochul.
"Allowing ICE to operate an office on Rikers Island and carry out Trump's destabilizing and extremist mass deportation agenda would make everyone in our city less safe," said a spokesperson for City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.
Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent another angry letter to Gov. Hochul on Monday, one day after New York ignored the deadline he'd set for the state to end its congestion pricing program.
On Tuesday, the city's largest municipal union, DC37, endorsed Adams as their top choice for mayor, followed by Zohran Mamdani and Zellnor Myrie as their second and third options.
Hochul reiterated that she will not terminate the program and vowed to see Duffy in court.
