Governor Kathy Hochul announced a significant 26% decrease in subway fare evasion over the last six months, dropping from 14% to 10% of riders evading fares. This improvement follows strategies initiated by the MTA after a report highlighted $690 million in losses due to fare evasion in 2022. Enhanced enforcement and modernization of fare collection methods are credited for the success. City officials are committed to ongoing efforts to further reduce fare evasion through strong enforcement and infrastructure upgrades. Similar reductions were reported for bus fare evasion, as overall transit strategies evolve.
We're turning the tide against fare evasion to help protect transit riders and taxpayers and continue strengthening our transit system, Governor Hochul said in a statement.
Our strategy has been to publicize the seriousness of the problem, to put in place stronger physical barriers, and to make sure there's plenty of enforcement, Janno Lieber, chair and CEO of MTA, said.
