The video echoes points reported by the New York Times in 2024: Halal carts have been left no choice but to charge more for chicken over rice due to the increase in the cost of goods and ingredients.
New York is suffering from a crisis and it's called halalflation,” Mamdani says, adding “Chicken over rice now costs $10 or more. It's time to make halal eight bucks again.
Advocacy groups like the Street Vendor Project have maintained the process is still far too slow, leaving vendors to either resort to what some have described as a black market for licensing or remain vulnerable to ticketing and potential harassment from city officials.
