New York City is enhancing its construction-zone speed camera program as part of a new state budget, extending coverage to major MTA bridges and tunnels. Automated ticketing for speeding will be enacted, with fines escalating for repeat offenses. This initiative, intended to protect road crews and maintain public safety, builds on a pilot program from 2021 and is set to operate until 2031. Additionally, there will be expanded automated weight enforcement for trucks on certain bridges, supporting broader safety efforts amid ongoing congestion pricing challenges.
"Public safety is the governor's top priority," said spokesperson Kara Cumoletti, emphasizing the program's role in protecting road crews and everyday travelers alike.
Catherine Sheridan, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, noted, "This is another tool [to make sure our maintenance workers and contractors are safe]," highlighting the initiative's importance.
