The Fight to End Plastic Turf Zeros in on NYC Parks
Briefly

A City Council bill seeks to ban the installation of artificial grass in NYC parks, driven by concerns over environmental and health impacts, including toxic chemicals and heat retention. The advocacy group, East River Park Action, co-founded by Pat Arnow, highlights the negative effects of plastic turf on community health and the environment. Councilmember Christopher Marte introduced the bill following a rebuild of East River Park that controversially includes artificial turf. Advocates argue for the return to natural grass for its safety and playability.
"As a player you want to play on real grass because the plastic stuff is too hot and it just doesn't feel right," Giles said.
"When I was a kid, I played on grass fields. I played baseball, soccer, and rugby. We know that this works," Marte told City Limits.
