The Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program implemented in May 2023 has recorded over 134,000 speeding citations across New York state highways in its first year. Of these, over 54,000 were issued in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, which operated 482 cameras. Transportation officials emphasize the importance of worker safety, linking the high citation numbers to the dense driver population and prevalent poor driving habits in the region, where construction projects are frequent. Continued efforts aim to improve safety and mobility in work zones.
Cameras began recording and fining motorists who violate speed limits in May 2023 as part of the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement program, which was permitted by law in 2021.
Long Island had 482 cameras deployed during that period, in line with other regions throughout the state, according to state transportation officials.
The New York State Department of Transportation is working extensively throughout Long Island on construction and maintenance projects to enhance safety and improve mobility for all users.
Experts also added that on Long Island, where driving remains the main mode of travel, poor driving habits could be contributing to increased speeding at work sites.
