Tenant Advocates Cheer Mamdani's Primary Election Win
Briefly

Zohran Mamdani, a Queens assemblymember, has emerged as the expected Democratic nominee for New York City mayor due to his strong stance on freezing rents for stabilized tenants. Advocacy groups, represented by Cea Weaver, emphasize the significant number of tenants in New York and view Mamdani’s campaign as a response to their needs. Despite Andrew Cuomo’s prior governor status, Mamdani secured over 44% of first-round votes in the primary. His commitment to a rent freeze aims to address the challenges faced by approximately 2 million rent-stabilized tenants as the Rent Guidelines Board considers potential increases.
"Tenants are the majority in New York. Zohran Mamdani understands that and he gave us something to vote for," Cea Weaver, director of the New York State Tenant Bloc, said of the candidate and expected Democratic nominee, who ran on a campaign to freeze rents for stabilized tenants.
Mamdani pledged to freeze the rent for all four years of his term if elected. The RGB froze the rent three times under Mayor Bill de Blasio, raising it 5 percent total over eight years.
For months, the group has been organizing thousands of canvassers in support of Democratic candidates who support a rent freeze for roughly 2 million tenants in the city's rent-stabilized apartments.
