Residents of Staten Island expressed deep frustration towards NYC's speed camera program at a recent town hall meeting, led by activists Scott LoBaido and John Tabacco. Over 300 individuals rallied against the initiative, claiming it prioritizes revenue over true safety. LoBaido suggested that the cameras serve the city’s financial interests instead of enhancing road safety. Additionally, he noted that effective alternatives like speed bumps are ignored in favor of profit-driven strategies. While the program faces legislative scrutiny, data from the city's Department of Transportation indicates that speed cameras have helped to reduce injuries and fatalities on city streets.
People are tired of getting spat on by the government, LoBaido said. What pisses me off is that the people let it happen... If it was about safety, they'd have speed bumps all over the place.
The speed camera program will expire this year unless the state legislature reauthorizes it during the current legislative session.
According to a 2024 DOT research report, areas with speed cameras installed in 2022 demonstrated 14% fewer injuries and fatalities than locations with no cameras.
LoBaido, known for publicity stunts, had been hit with a multitude of speeding tickets, which raises questions about his stance against the speed camera program.
