New legislation in New York aims to eliminate the black market for restaurant reservations by prohibiting third-party agents from selling seats to the highest bidders. The goal is to ensure everyone has an equal chance to enjoy dining.
Gov. Kathy Hochul emphasized that New York is home to some of the best restaurants, and everyone deserves "a fair system" when it comes to reservations. This law is intended to make dining accessible to all.
Melissa Fleischut, President of the New York State Restaurant Association, remarked on the detrimental effects of AI bots that have been hoarding reservations. These practices have led to increased ‘no-show’ rates, complicating restaurant operations.
The new law does not affect legitimate services like SevenRooms and Resy, which collaborate directly with restaurants. It's specifically aimed at combating unauthorized reservation arrangements that exploit diners.
