Mayor Eric Adams clarified that the executive order permitting ICE investigations at Rikers Island was initiated by his first deputy mayor and suggested by Queens City Councilmember Robert Holden. Adams stated during a press conference that Holden persistently advocated for the action. However, Holden disputes this characterization, suggesting that Adams is unfairly shifting the blame and expressed concern that the mayor's remarks misrepresented their interaction regarding the controversial plan now facing legal challenges.
"The first person that brought that to me about ... ICE on Rikers was Councilman Holden," Adams said during his weekly "off-topic" press conference.
"I looked at it [like the mayor was deflecting to me]," Holden said.
"This was one of his ideas," he added. "He was almost annoying me."
"Well, that's the way I took it, like he was deflecting, or at least saying it was Holden's idea," Holden said.
