Protesters rip NYC for replacing promised affordable housing building with homeless shelter: 'Bait and switch'
Briefly

Residents of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn are opposing the city's decision to replace an affordable housing project with a homeless shelter, accusing officials of deception. Hundreds protested, expressing fears about crime and community safety. The site at Coyle Street, initially meant for 119 housing units, is now set to become a homeless shelter for 169 families. The community contends they were not adequately consulted about this shift, raising strong concerns over the implications for their neighborhood and sense of betrayal toward city officials.
"They tricked us. They lied. And when you lie - the truth always comes out," said Michelle Crisafulli, 71, who lives just a short walk from the proposed site.
"It's aggravating to me to know when I own my property - I feel like they're just stepping on my face, you know? And it's not right ... I'm not letting go, I'm like a pitbull on the bone."
