Canarsie residents held another rally demanding ferry service at Canarsie Pier, emphasizing the need for transportation equity. Rally organizer Jibreel Jalloh highlighted the lengthy struggle spanning eight years, with two mayors and persistent advocacy. Councilmember Mercedes Narcisse supported the movement, arguing that a ferry would significantly improve commutes and connect the community with broader opportunities. In a strategic move, Narcisse plans to introduce legislation formalizing the request for a ferry stop at Canarsie Pier to benefit surrounding neighborhoods, underscoring the historical advocacy efforts that preceded this rally.
We are saying enough is enough; we're gathering here today, after eight years and two mayors, asking for a ferry," said Jibreel Jalloh, rally organizer and Executive Director of The Flossy Organization (TFO), a grassroots nonprofit advocating for marginalized communities.
"We're not going to be the forgotten district ... this isn't a luxury, it is a lifeline," she said. "A ferry would shorten commutes, extend access to jobs and schools and open up our neighborhood to our lovely New Yorkers that want to come visit."
