The NYPD is tackling a significant hiring crisis due to a significant drop in personnel, particularly sergeants. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced a new initiative aimed at increasing recruitment. This includes reducing the college credit requirement from 60 to 24 credits and reinstating a timed-run requirement for recruits. Tisch noted that despite having budget support from Mayor Eric Adams, the department struggles to attract applicants, a stark change from past recruitment scenarios where waiting to join the academy was the norm. The new measures aim to make it easier for potential recruits to enter the police force.
Tisch emphasized, "We need more cops, and I'm not going to sugarcoat it. We're in a hiring crisis, and Mayor Adams has given us resources."
"It wasn't long ago that people waited years to join the academy. Now we are practically begging people to take the exam," Tisch remarked.
The NYPD plans to cut college credit requirements for recruits from 60 to 24 credits and reinstate a timed-run requirement.
Due to stringent credit requirements, the NYPD disqualified 29% of applicants in 2023.
