Democrats introduced a legislative move intended to delay special elections, particularly impacting New York's District 21 following Rep. Elise Stefanik's resignation. This change, supported by Gov. Kathy Hochul and driven by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies, could potentially coincide the special election with the November general elections. In response, Rep. Mike Lawler has formally requested a racketeering investigation into Hochul and other leaders, asserting that the actions constitute a severe abuse of power and undermine democratic processes.
“This blatantly corrupt power grab reeks of racketeering and internationally subverts the will of voters in the North Country,” Lawler said.
“Their scheme to alter the schedule for the special election is a serious abuse of power that is more alike to election processes in authoritarian countries than anything we see in the United States,” the letter reads.
