With Trump in the White House and GOP control of Congress, Democratic governors are stepping up to challenge his policies. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is at the forefront, opposing Trump's demand to eliminate NYC's congestion pricing program, aimed at reducing traffic and funding infrastructure. Hochul emphasizes the need for Democratic leaders to act as a 'firewall' against potential Republican cuts to social safety nets. She commits to fiercely opposing measures that negatively impact New Yorkers, asserting that decisions affecting the city should remain local, not dictated by Trump officials.
"We offered up an olive branch, [we said] 'We'll work with you on infrastructure. Let's redo Penn Station,'" Hochul said. "But once you draw first blood on us, we're coming back hard."
"It's up to Democratic governors to be the 'firewall' as Republicans in Congress weigh slashing social safety net programs," Hochul stated.
"I will be leading the resistance on policies like these where you're hurting New Yorkers directly. This is our decision, not yours," she added.
"Hochul is currently locked in a fight with the Trump administration over the president's demand to scrap a hard-fought congestion pricing program in New York City."
