Mother of Queens man shot by police during mental health crisis tearfully begs Queens DA to drop charges: Our lives are changed forever' | amNewYork
"As a family, we only called 911 for medical transport, instead of getting support and treatment, Jabez got shot mult"
"The controversial incident was caught on police body-worn camera and appeared to show cops retreat into the home's vestibule while issuing verbal demands that he drop the weapon."
"One officer slammed the living room door shut, but seconds later, Jabez Chakraborty attempted to open it. That led one of the responding officers, identified as Tyree White, to open fire several times, striking him multiple times and causing him to collapse."
Jabez Chakraborty, 22, was shot multiple times by police on January 25 inside his Briarwood home after his family called 911 seeking medical assistance during a mental health crisis. His mother attempted to disarm him of a knife, but he broke free and approached officers who had retreated into the vestibule. Officer Tyree White opened fire, striking Chakraborty multiple times. Body camera footage released in February documented the incident. As of March 11, Chakraborty remains hospitalized and bed-bound. His mother, Juli Chakraborty, continues pleading with Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz to drop charges of attempted assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon, arguing the family sought medical support, not police intervention.
