Last year, the MTA rolled out the Fare-Free Bus Pilot program, designating one fare-free bus route in each borough. The pilot aims to gather insights on ridership rates, fare evasion, equity, and service speeds.
Congress members, led by Rep. Grace Meng and Rep. Dan Goldman, requested $45 million for the expansion of the NYC fare-free bus pilot. They also sought an additional $45 million to enhance the frequency and reliability of MTA buses, considered the slowest in the nation.
The lawmakers emphasized that expanding the Fare-Free Bus Pilot program with more routes would provide the MTA with a comprehensive view of the benefits of fare-free transit in New York, benefiting millions of New Yorkers and visitors reliant on the MTA for economic and educational access.
