Leaders of Manhattan Community Boards 4, 5, and 6 have formally requested a dedicated busway along 34th Street from Mayor Adams and the Department of Transportation. This initiative, long sought after, aims to improve public transportation efficiency in a congested area. Along with the busway, the community boards are advocating for wider sidewalks and designated pickup zones to enhance safety. Citing the success of a similar initiative on 14th Street, the boards believe that a busway will increase bus speeds and ridership without exacerbating traffic congestion.
Given the critical need to enhance public transportation infrastructure in this highly congested area of Manhattan, this project would significantly improve the efficiency and livability of 34th Street for both commuters and pedestrians.
The success of the 14th Street busway serves as a compelling precedent. After implementation, bus speeds on 14th Street increased by at least 24 percent, and bus ridership grew by 30 percent.
