Long Islander Amanda Lefton named new DEC commissioner

Amanda Lefton, originally from Queens and currently residing upstate, has been appointed the new commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation by Governor Hochul. Lefton possesses an impressive background in environmental policy, including her experience with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and as New York's first assistant secretary for energy and environment. She will oversee a significant budget and staff, working to manage public lands and enforce environmental laws. Environmental advocates have expressed support for her nomination, highlighting her strong leadership and expertise.
As DEC commissioner, she will oversee the state agency with a $2.5 billion budget and staff of more than 3,000 that manages 5 million acres of public lands.
