Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a city emergency on homelessness shortly after taking office, enabling fast measures to tackle the crisis. This action allowed for no-bid contracts and waivers on affordable housing regulations, which have reportedly decreased homelessness for the first time in years. However, after two and a half years, some City Council members, including Tim McOsker, are pushing to rescind the declaration to restore public oversight and accountability, highlighting the need for continued solutions to the homelessness crisis, irrespective of the declaration's status.
The emergency declaration has resulted in homelessness decreasing for the first time in years, bucking statewide and nationwide trends.
Let's come back to why these processes exist. They exist so the public can be made aware of what we're doing with public dollars.
