Portland's upcoming budget is facing a significant $157 million shortfall, prompting the City Council to hold public sessions to discuss potential cuts. Mayor Keith Wilson will propose a budget in May, which the council will modify before adopting a balanced budget by July 1. Recent sessions have drawn crowds concerned about preserving local services, with emotional testimonies about community centers potentially closing and job losses for city workers, highlighting the urgency and impact of the budget decisions to be made.
"It was quite emotional, listening to people begging not to close the community centers in St. John's, Montavilla and Peninsula Park. Also the Laborer's Union guys who keep the city running and stand to lose their jobs, along with hundreds of others."
The City Council will hold its final two public listening sessions on potential budget cuts this week on April 1 and 3, before the Mayor's proposed budget in May.
