In a significant political move, nearly 7,000 Jewish voters registered as Democrats ahead of the June mayoral primary, representing a notable shift in political engagement linked to rising antisemitism. Most of these new registrants transitioned from independent or Republican affiliations. The registration effort, spearheaded by the Jewish Voters Action Network (JVAN), aims to amplify Jewish voices in a critical election cycle amidst growing concerns over antisemitism, particularly after recent geopolitical events. JVAN's founder, Maury Litwack, emphasized the importance of Jewish voters in influencing the election outcome, stating their intent to be active participants in the political landscape.
"We think this registration drive is a big deal. Jewish voters are a sleeping giant in New York politics," JVAN founder Maury Litwack told The Post on Sunday. "And they are awake."
"Antisemitism is on the rise. Jews are saying they want their voices heard at the ballot box," Litwack said.
Concerns about antisemitism are driving up interest in the 2025 elections among Jews across the spectrum - orthodox, conservative and reformed, Litwak said.
The effort to re-register voters as Democrats is because the winner of the Democratic primary will be heavily favored to win the general election."
