Rep. Tom Suozzi of Long Island is facing political backlash after dissenting against a bill aimed at banning transgender women from competing in female sports. Republicans plan to leverage his no vote as a tool against his re-election. Despite winning narrowly last November, Suozzi previously expressed concerns about biological boys in girls' sports. His recent vote against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act contradicts his earlier stance, particularly given his district's local legislation prohibiting biological men from competing with women, sparking disappointment among constituents and local officials.
"Spineless Tom Suozzi lied to voters, blatantly flip-flopped his position, and abandoned his district when he sided with Hakeem Jeffries and Kathy Hochul by voting to allow boys to compete in girls' sports," charged National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee spokeswoman Maureen O'Toole.
"The Democrats have to stop pandering to the far left. I don't want to discriminate against anybody, but I don't think biological boys should be playing in girls' sports." Suozzi stated this after narrowly winning re-election.
"I am disappointed that our [Long Island] Congressional Delegation chose to support their Democrat Party bosses rather than their constituents," said Republican Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.
Suozzi's no vote on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act has opened him to criticism, particularly after his district previously banned biological men from competing in women's sports.
