DOT Proposing A 14th Street-Style Busway For 34th Street - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

The Department of Transportation is planning to implement a busway on 34th Street, similar to the successful 14th Street busway in Manhattan. The plan aims to relieve congestion along key stretches of the M34 route, which currently suffers from slow speeds due to heavy traffic. Community leaders and elected officials have shown strong support for the initiative, citing prior successes where banning through traffic significantly increased bus speeds and ridership. The busway will allow car access but requires drivers to make prompt right turns to minimize delays for buses.
"The M14 has proven the model here," said Council Member Keith Powers (D-Midtown), who said he rides the bus every day. "If you dedicate a big chunk of a corridor to bus service, you will see strong results."
Starting today, the DOT will start presenting to the two Midtown community boards its plan for a busway on 34th Street between Third and Ninth avenues.
