Career criminal with more than 70 prior busts tries to rape woman on Manhattan subway: cops
Briefly

On a Manhattan subway train, a woman endured a brutal sexual assault attempt by Tyriek Martin, a career criminal with a lengthy rap sheet, including past assaults on young children. The attack escalated as Martin physically overpowered the victim, but her screams for help attracted the attention of nearby construction workers who intervened, restraining him until police arrived. Despite suffering a fractured nose, the victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, while Martin faced multiple severe charges, including attempted rape. His history of mental incompetence raises troubling questions regarding his prior arrests and legal consequences.
Several construction workers heard her cries, boarded the train and held Martin down until cops arrived and cuffed him, the source said.
The victim, who suffered a fractured nose in the midday attack, was taken to a local hospital for treatment, cops said.
Martin was promptly arrested and charged with first-degree attempted rape, first-degree sexual abuse and third-degree assault, authorities said.
Tyriek Martin - whose rap sheet includes a 2021 bust for bashing a 2-year-old girl with a suitcase - randomly approached the 34-year-old victim.
