California street-vending bill, killed last year, is resurrected today
Briefly

SB 925 seeks to empower San Francisco police to regulate street vending more effectively, focusing on controlling the sale of often-stolen items. After failing in committee in August 2024, Sen. Scott Wiener has reintroduced the bill for 2025 with renewed hopes of passing it. Despite backing from community vendors and local officials, not all leaders, such as Supervisor Jackie Fielder, are convinced of its necessity, reflecting broader concerns about enforcement in current political climates. Proponents continue to advocate for changes to improve the chaotic street vending conditions in San Francisco post-pandemic.
"Who knows if it would have even worked, but at least it was something," said then-District 9 Supervisor Hillary Ronen of SB 925, reflecting on her hopes of reforming street vending.
"I've done everything I can to lay groundwork with the committees so that it moves forward. I cannot guarantee that it will pass, but we definitely have a path to get it passed," said Wiener.
"At the moment, I have more concerns than reasons to back this, especially in a Trump administration," said Supervisor Jackie Fielder, illustrating her lack of support.
