The plaintiffs argue this negligence violates federal law and are calling for the state to replace magnetic strip cards with safer chip cards. Additionally, they seek reimbursement for theft victims. Last year, New Yorkers reported numerous instances of benefits being stolen, indicating a significant issue with the current system that requires urgent reform.
"Every SNAP recipient has the right to timely, accurate, and fair provision of their benefits and because of constant skimming, they're not getting that," Alison Roberts, attorney for the plaintiffs.
The complaint alleges the state is violating federal law by failing to ensure New Yorkers receive benefits to which they're entitled.
