A 17-year-old in Upstate New York has been charged with the murder of his 14-year-old girlfriend, Samantha Humphrey, after she allegedly disclosed her pregnancy. Prosecutors state that the teen was opposed to the idea of fatherhood and pressured Samantha to terminate the pregnancy. Samantha was missing for three months before her body was found in the Mohawk River, having been strangled. The suspect faces lesser sentencing as a juvenile, having pleaded not guilty and being remanded to a detention center. The trial is expected to occur next year.
"He wanted nothing to do with her baby and insisted she got rid of it," the DA said.
"We believe that Samantha thought she was pregnant and that this sometime boyfriend was the father," Schenectady County District Attorney Robert M. Carney told a news conference.
The charged teen was remanded to a juvenile detention center and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life.
Humphrey was last seen alive on November 25, 2022, wearing a black and pink puffy jacket, bell-bottom jeans and tan Timberland boots.
