In Brooklyn's Prospect Park, artist Molly Gochman's sculpture 'Monuments to Motherhood' stands as a 15-foot tribute to unrecognized caregiving efforts. Made from bronze casts of common household items, it symbolizes domestic labor's importance. Designed to be touched, the sculpture's ever-changing patina reflects the lasting impact of caregiving on society. Gochman emphasizes that this monument honors countless individuals, like parents and health workers, who carry out acts of care silently. The installation coincides with a season of community events and commemorates the unseen sacrifices made during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The more hands interact with it, the more the sculpture's patina will shift-and that's on purpose.
This work is a monument to all of us, including the millions of people-parents, nurses, childcare workers, home health aides-who perform acts of care every day, often without recognition.
