The trend of using surnames as first names for newborns is rising. Experts note that many surnames are now seen as traditional first names, often with historical precedent. Names like Cash, Quinn, and Wells are gaining popularity, while names like Montgomery and Jennings are anticipated to be the next big trends. Additionally, there's a rise in 'rock 'n' roll' names and those that end in unique letters. This shift reflects generational changes in naming preferences, with many from Millennial and Gen X becoming perceived as dated.
"Many surnames are so well established in our first-name culture that we don't even think of them as surnames at all," Namerology founder Laura Wattenberg told Today.
"I expect to see parents start to explore names with a more gentlemanly throwback style, like Montgomery, Shepard and Jennings," she said.
