'The school has to be evacuated': Connecticut students are setting their Chromebooks on fire for TikTok

A new TikTok trend among students in Connecticut involves inserting various objects into Chromebook charging ports, resulting in several school fire evacuations. The trend, aimed primarily at creating funny videos, has seen incidents at Newington High School and others, leading to the intentional destruction of school property. Superintendent Maureen Brummett noted that such actions pose a serious threat, and students will be responsible for replacing damaged equipment, particularly as Chromebooks are becoming increasingly expensive.

One student managed to cause a laptop fire and trigger an evacuation after filming a ‘how-to’ video that involved inserting objects into a Chromebook charging port.

Superintendent Maureen Brummett emphasized that students will be held accountable for intentionally damaging school equipment, stating, ‘It's their responsibility to replace it.’
