The United Airlines NYC Half on March 16 will see 27,000 runners takings its new route across the Brooklyn Bridge. This change, prompted by construction on the Manhattan Bridge, has the potential to become a permanent feature. Starting near Brooklyn Museum, the half-marathon will travel through Prospect Park, Flatbush Avenue, and Times Square before finishing in Central Park. Major street closures will affect commutes, particularly in Downtown Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Race Director Ted Metellus expressed excitement about the event's inclusive nature and its potential to promote community engagement among runners.
Moving a half-marathon that'll draw runners and spectators across the Brooklyn Bridge was no easy feat because of the sheer volume of work needed to figure out how both participants and those commuting over the bridge would be able to get to where they need to be that day.
A little bit of experience, a lot of skill and tremendous participation helps facilitate it. But I also think seeing people of all ages and all abilities out there running does tend to inspire people.
It's now an opportunity to interface and engage with other people. With folks working from home, and people not really interacting the way they did prior to, there are run clubs that run weekly and it's an opportunity for people you meet weekly and set a goal: 'I want to run the United Airlines Half Marathon.'
