Staten Island Chuck was right! NYC groundhog's 2025 prediction of an early spring confirmed by student weather trackers
Briefly

In an interesting twist on the annual Groundhog Day tradition, Staten Island Chuck has been declared the more accurate weather predictor this year. Local students showcased their research, revealing that Chuck correctly forecasted spring beginning as early as February 25, unlike Punxsutawney Phil, who predicted six more weeks of winter. The students from Susan Wager High School conducted weather tracking using advanced technology, logging daily temperatures to support their claims. Their findings showed a brief cold spell, but ultimately, warmer weather arrived ahead of schedule, generating excitement among the students and community.
"Chuck was correct!" senior Gabby Beitta, 18, the group's record keeper, said at the big reveal Thursday, igniting a roar of cheers from her fellow weather trackers.
"They detect the moisture in the dirt, the fertilization levels of the soil - it actually measures a lot of soil because it's burrowed into the ground - and it also uses satellites from different parts of the city to give us some more accurate reading of the average of the weather for the city," explained Pheoniz Garcia, 16, a junior at the school.
Their data showed that temperatures stayed low from Groundhog Day through Valentine's Day, when a warm wave of 40-degree days swept through the city.
A sudden cold snap, however, plunged the five boroughs back to 35 degrees, and even as low as 25 degrees, for another week - threatening the residents.
