S.F. homeless families say Mayor Lurie promised reprieve. They got eviction notices instead.
Briefly

Emily Liotta and her family received eviction notice from a homeless shelter despite reassurances from Mayor Daniel Lurie about support for families making progress towards permanent housing. This situation exemplifies the return to a pre-pandemic policy limiting family stays to 90 days, with 30-day extensions, affecting many. Families organized, reached out to officials, and engaged with the mayor's policy chief, who facilitated a meeting. While Liotta felt hopeful after the meeting, the confusing directives from shelter staff raise concerns about actual support and communication regarding housing assistance.
"In the meeting, I felt very satisfied because he really listened to us and he answered our questions and he really gave us hope," Liotta said about Lurie.
"These are orders from above us. You're being evicted," Liotta recalls shelter staff telling her.
Kunal Modi, the mayor's policy chief on health, homelessness, and family services, heard of the families' plight and visited the 16th and Mission office of Faith in Action Bay Area.
Liotta and about two dozen other families were among the first casualties of a return to a pre-pandemic policy - one that limits family stays at city-run shelters to a maximum of 90 days.
