R. Kikuo Johnson, an artist based in Brooklyn, expresses his love for living in New York without the need for a car, contrasting his upbringing in Maui. However, as a father, he finds that mobility becomes more challenging due to the demands of parenting, particularly when it comes to transporting his daughter. His personal anecdotes illustrate the complexities of urban life, where convenience meets the practicalities of raising a child in a bustling city environment.
"One of the things that I've always loved about living in New York is that I don't need to own a car," R. Kikuo Johnson, the artist behind the March 31, 2025, issue, said. He grew up in Maui, Hawaii, and now lives in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn.
"Since becoming a father, though, schlepping around town has become increasingly complicated. My baby daughter is growing much faster than my stroller-lifting muscles." Johnson continued.
