Two individuals, including a mother, have been charged following the tragic death of a 4-year-old boy discovered unresponsive in an East Flatbush shelter. The mother, Miriam Elkayam, and Sklar Yitzhok face charges of child abandonment and drug possession. Despite administering Naloxone (Narcan) twice, efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful. While drugs were located at the shelter, authorities are still determining if the boy was directly exposed. The Department of Social Services is conducting an investigation into this deeply concerning incident.
Police say the boy's mom, 26-year-old Miriam Elkayam, has been charged with abandonment of a child and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
A spokesperson for the Department of Social Services calls this a 'heartbreaking and horrific tragedy' and says DSS will conduct a thorough investigation.
