NYC's new Jewish American history curriculum aims to combat antisemitism
Briefly

In late 2023, NYC officials enlisted historian Natalia Mehlman Petrzela to lead a new curriculum on Jewish American history as part of the Hidden Voices initiative. Despite her primary focus not being Jewish studies, she found her expertise in amplifying marginalized narratives aligned well with the project's goals. This initiative is aimed at diversifying historical perspectives in education, particularly in light of increasing antisemitism and Islamophobia. The materials will pilot in five NYC districts before broader distribution next school year.
"The work of amplifying 'hidden voices' who may not be central to conventional historical narratives is core to what I do as a teacher and a scholar."
