New FDNY EMTs reveal touching reasons they signed up
Briefly

During a commencement ceremony, two women shared their personal experiences with EMTs that inspired them to become first responders themselves. Juliette Bosco recounted how EMTs had provided invaluable care to her dying family member, igniting her desire to emulate their professionalism. Miriam Beltran reflected on a traumatic accident involving her father, where EMTs calmed the situation and provided essential care, ultimately convincing her to pursue a career as an EMT. Their stories emphasize the critical role that first responders play in emergency situations and the importance of the FDNY in bolstering its staff amid recruitment challenges.
I was taking care of a dying family member, and the EMTs and paramedics that showed up to my house were so good with her. They took such great care of her - they made her feel safe, and they made me feel safe. I wanted to be like them. I wanted to be the best of the best. I want to work alongside New York City's best. So I joined the FDNY, and now I'm here.
And when the EMTs came - they were FDNY - they calmed me down, they calmed my mom down ... [and] they kept him calm. He thought he was going to be blind. But they took really good care of him; after that, I decided, 'Why not try [being an EMT] and see if I like it?' And it turns out I love my job.
