The MTA has reversed its decision to cancel a valuable program for autistic students that allows them to create public service announcements in the subway system. Initially denied continuation, the agency changed course after public outcry and acknowledgment of past successful collaborations. The program will now be co-sponsored by INCLUDEnyc during April Autism Acceptance Month, with enthusiastic reactions from parents and advocates. They express excitement about showcasing children's capabilities and the importance of the program, which was reportedly reinstated partly due to media attention.
"Our autism program is ongoing and it existed long ago and it is continuing," said MTA chairman Janno Lieber, clarifying the situation around the program.
"I am writing to let you know the MTA decided to honor your children this year after all. I am so pleased," said Jonathan Trichter, head of the Autism Transit Project.
"It's going to be great for kids to showcase their abilities and why they matter," said parent Brenna Calles, expressing excitement about her son recording again.
"This is great news. It's the right thing to do," said parent Brenna Calles, reflecting the relief and happiness over the program's reinstatement.
