Judge Orders Education Dept. to Restore Teacher Prep Grants
Briefly

A federal judge in Maryland mandated the U.S. Department of Education to restore $600 million in grants that had been terminated as part of a budget-cutting initiative. Organizations representing teacher education challenged these cancellations in court, asserting their illegality. Judge Julie Rubin's ruling requires the immediate reinstatement of funding for several pivotal programs, including Supporting Effective Educator Development and Teacher Quality Partnership. This decision not only reinstates vital funds but also prohibits further unlawful terminations of similar grants, reinforcing the importance of equitable educational support.
"We are thrilled that the court has ruled in favor of preserving funding for TQP, SEED, and TSL grants, which have a transformative impact on our nation's education system."
The order blocks the department from terminating any other TQP, SEED or TSL grant awards "in a manner this court has determined is likely unlawful as violative of the Administrative Procedure Act."
