Danielle Khalaf, a 14-year-old Arab American student, was criticized by her teacher for sitting during the Pledge of Allegiance as a protest against U.S. involvement in Palestinian issues. Following her act of protest, the teacher made inappropriate comments suggesting she should either stand or return to her country. Distressed, Khalaf reported the incident to school authorities, prompting a vague response from the Plymouth-Canton Community School District, which mentioned some 'restorative practices' but did not disclose specific actions or details about the teacher involved.
"I decided I wanted to sit down because I didn't feel comfortable standing, because of what's happening in Palestine," Khalaf said at a press conference held by the ACRL.
After the pledge was completed, Khalaf said, her teacher 'addressed the class and said that anyone that was sitting down was being very disrespectful' to soldiers and the U.S.
