A disturbing incident at a Brooklyn subway station involved a group of young men attacking 16-year-old Dakari White, who was alone at the time. Video footage captured the assault, which included racial slurs and involved theft of his sneakers. Dakari's mother, Monique White, expressed outrage and called for justice after the attack left her son with significant injuries. Although subway crime has reportedly decreased, riders' perceptions of safety remain low, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures in the transit system.
"My son is a good kid. He's well-mannered ... and I drive my son to school every morning. I didn't feel well. I said, 'You're gonna go alone.' And he left, and he called me and he said, 'Mommy I was jumped.'"
"They beat him. They have pictures, they posted pictures of him on the floor. They chased him and they beat him again at another section of this train station."
"I want justice for my son," White said.
"While city data shows subway crimes are down, there are riders who don't feel safe, and activists say more safety measures are needed."
