This Memorial Day, Nassau County will honor its veteran community by asking residents to participate in two moments of silence as all 71 fire stations sound alarms at noon and 6 p.m. County Executive Bruce Blakeman emphasized the importance of remembering those young service members who made the ultimate sacrifice, urging residents to pause their activities to reflect during these moments. This tradition has been observed since 2022, reinforcing the solemnity of the day amidst the celebratory activities typical of Memorial Day.
The synchronized observances will take place at 12 noon and at 6 p.m. this coming Monday, a yearly tradition since County Executive Bruce Blakeman took office in 2022.
Blakeman urged residents to stop what they're doing to honor veterans, stating, 'When you hear that siren - wherever you may be - please take a moment, stand at attention, be silent...'
There's a lot of things that we do on Memorial Day that are celebrations...but we should never forget the reason for Memorial Day,
The importance of Memorial Day is remembering those 18, 19, 20 year-olds who never got to enjoy their life...and the least we could do is take some time out to remember them.
