The Whitney Biennial has sparked dialogues within the art world, notably through Justin Peck's 'Mystic Familiar,' a collaboration with Eamon Ore-Giron, Dan Deacon, and Humberto Leon. Peck emphasizes a fresh ballet experience that diverges from traditional Tchaikovsky, utilizing visual art to enhance narrative depth on stage. Ore-Giron expresses excitement at merging painting with performance, showcasing how dancers' athleticism embodies concepts of nature's elements. This production at the David H. Koch Theater showcases an innovative exploration that aims to redefine ballet's potential and broaden its audience.
The ballet experience can hold the work of visual artists and kinetic movement, and new music. Mystic Familiar is a great example of delivering something that's all new for the audience.
The main thing that was exciting for me was this idea of the expanded field, thinking about painting beyond a gallery and beyond a wall. To see the athleticism and physicality of the dancers...to take painting somewhere else.
