March has been notably windy in New York City, with more than half the days experiencing strong breezes, influenced by storm systems from the Midwest. Meteorologist Cody Braub noted that as these systems move east, cold air follows, contributing to the winds. Although the wind speeds align with typical March conditions, the continuous occurrence has made it feel more intense. This month, New York has averaged wind gusts of 25-30 mph, with over half the days in "near gale" territory, greatly impacted by severe storms across eight states that resulted in at least 37 fatalities.
"Winds come crashing in behind each one, which is pretty typical. I think it's just been a higher frequency of these systems kind of moving out of the center part of the country and exiting off the East Coast," explained Cody Braub, a meteorologist with Fox Weather, told The Post.
"I would say over half the days experienced a max wind gust of 30 miles an hour or greater, which doesn't sound like a lot, but day after day after day, it does start to add up," continued Braub.
"As they continue to move from west to east, that's when you'll get some cold air crashing in."
"Most of the gusts recorded were typical for March, but their higher frequency resulted from stronger storms in the Midwest, affecting the Big Apple."
